Why Glove Choice Matters
Goalkeeper gloves are more than just accessories they're critical tools that can:
- Improve grip and ball control
- Protect growing hands from impact
- Build confidence in young goalkeepers
- Last longer when chosen and cared for properly
Finding the Perfect Fit for any Junior goalkeeper.
Glove fit and feel is down to what feels comfortable to each goalkeeper.
Too big = Poor hand to ball contact and reduced control- Too small = Restricted movement, discomfort stitches pop and gloves tear.
- Just right = ¼"-½" (6.35mm - 12.7mm) fingertip space when hand is flat
Top tip: have your keeper try gloves with their hand slightly curled (like when catching) to test real-game fit.
Glove Care = Longevity
Young keepers are tough on gloves, but these habits can double their lifespan:
The Care Routine:
- Pre-Game Prep: Lightly dampen latex palms for better grip and durability. Sugary drinks can increase abrasion and cause mould.
- During Play: Avoid dragging palms on turf
-
Post-Game Care:
- Rinse with cool water- below 30 degrees (soap not recommended - it can change latex characteristics)
- Air dry (never radiators, never direct sun)
- Store rolled, not folded
Keep a spray bottle and microfiber cloth in the gear bag for quick cleanups.
Understanding Cuts
The glove cut controls the profile of the hand to ball contact, each offers different benefits and feel. There are a lot of different cuts out there, but we've explained ours below:
Roll Finger
The fabled roll finger which set the standards in the evolution of goalkeeper gloves. Named because of the palm being directly connected to the backhand with no gussets, whilst rolling around the fingers. This cut provides maximum ball to surface contact whilst having a significantly different feel compared to hybrid or negative cuts.
Negative Hybrid
The negative hybrid cut is a perfect balance between a negative cut combined with a negative roll tip. The characteristics of the rolled tip allows for superior latex coverage on the ball.
WHY LATEX MATTERS – The Goalkeeper's Secret Weapon
Latex is the core component of every elite Calma goalkeeper glove. It provides the grip, cushioning, and control needed to make crucial saves but not all latex is equal: Low-grade latex wears out quickly, cracks easily, and lacks the grip needed for competitive play.
Premium latex delivers superior grip, durability, and comfort giving you the confidence and edge you need in every match.
At Calma, we use high-performance latex, trusted by elite goalkeepers across the world's top leagues. Known for its outstanding grip and responsiveness, the gloves you wear have the exact same latex and specification to our endorsees.
When to Replace Gloves
Each goalkeeper is different, some top professionals wear a new glove every game. We're not expecting your child to do that just yet, there are however some tell tale signs it might be time to bring out a fresh pair.
- Visible palm wear though to the inner mesh
- Loose stitching
- Loss of grip even when clean
- Fingers poking through
- Smelly and bad odours
